Prologue

"We sent our manuscript to Book Edge Solutions after three failed attempts with other services. Within eleven weeks, we were holding a finished book that exceeded every expectation."

β€” Niamh Γ“ Ceallaigh, Tides of Connemara, published March 2025

Every book begins as a spark β€” an idea scrawled on a napkin, a document growing in fits and starts, a story that won't let go. We exist to carry that spark through every chapter of the publishing journey until it reaches readers.

Chapter I

The Spark β€” Manuscript Assessment & Developmental Strategy

Before a single comma is moved, we read your entire manuscript. Not for errors β€” for potential. Our developmental readers evaluate structure, voice, pacing, and market positioning. You receive a candid editorial letter: what works, what needs rethinking, and a concrete roadmap for revision.

This isn't a template report. Each assessment is written by a reader who has worked with manuscripts in your genre. Literary fiction gets a different lens than memoir, and children's picture books demand a completely separate framework.

"The assessment letter alone was worth the entire fee. It showed me the book I was actually writing, not the one I thought I was writing."
β€” CiarΓ‘n Devlin, debut novelist

Shaping β€” Editing, Line by Line

Substantive Editing

We restructure chapters, tighten dialogue, and strengthen transitions. This is the heavy lifting β€” the stage where good manuscripts become excellent ones. Our editors work directly in your document with tracked changes and margin commentary.

Copy Editing

Grammar, syntax, consistency, fact-checking, style-sheet creation. We follow your preferred style guide (Chicago, AP, or house style) and build a custom reference sheet for your book's unique terms, character names, and timeline.

Proofreading

The final safety net. A fresh pair of eyes on the typeset pages, catching orphans, widows, hyphenation errors, and any last typos that survived earlier rounds.

Author Feedback

"My editor caught a timeline inconsistency in chapter fourteen that would have embarrassed me for years. The level of attention was extraordinary."

β€” TomΓ‘s Kavanagh, The Walled Garden

By the Numbers

Average turnaround for a 75,000-word manuscript: 6 weeks for substantive edit, 3 weeks for copy edit, 8 days for final proof.

Since 2019, we have helped authors in Ireland and beyond publish 143 titles across 22 genres.

Chapter III

Design β€” Cover, Interior & Identity

A book is a physical (or digital) object. Its design communicates genre, quality, and intent before a single word is read. We design covers that sell and interiors that honour the reading experience.

Cover design iteration β€” from concept sketch to final press-ready file.

Cover Design

Three concept directions. Unlimited revisions within the chosen direction. Delivered in print-ready PDF, ebook-optimised JPEG, and social-media-ready formats.

Interior Typesetting

Professional typesetting for print (InDesign) and reflowable ebook (ePub3 & Kindle). We handle drop caps, running heads, ornamental breaks, image placement, and index formatting.

Brand Identity for Authors

Logo, colour palette, author website style guide, and social media templates. Build a recognisable author brand that carries across your entire catalogue.

What Authors Ask Us

Do you work with first-time authors?

Absolutely. A significant portion of our clients are publishing their first book. We provide extra guidance on ISBNs, copyright registration, and the decisions unique to debut authors.

Can I hire you for editing only, without design or distribution?

Yes. Every service is available independently. Many authors come to us for a single stage and return later for additional support.

What genres do you specialise in?

Literary fiction, memoir, historical fiction, poetry, children's books, and non-fiction (particularly Irish history, nature writing, and business). We don't take on academic textbooks or highly technical manuals.

How do you price your services?

We quote per project after reviewing a sample of your manuscript (usually the first three chapters). There are no hidden fees. A detailed estimate with milestones is provided before any work begins.

Do you retain any rights to my work?

Never. You retain full copyright and all rights to your manuscript, cover design files, and marketing materials. Our contract explicitly states this.

"Professional, patient, and genuinely invested in my book's success. I've recommended Book Edge to every writer I know."

β€” Aoife Mullan, Saltwater Bones

"The cover design alone generated buzz on social media before the book even launched. People were pre-ordering based on the cover reveal."

β€” Declan Roe, Under the Croagh

"They turned my sprawling 120,000-word draft into a tight, compelling 88,000-word novel. The structural edit was transformative."

β€” RΓ³nΓ‘n Whelan, The Fenian Directive
